Maryland Rural Development Corporation Teacher Assistant in Aberdeen, Maryland

Under the direction of the Head Start Director, the Teacher assists in overseeing and directing the planning, organizing, and implementation of education services for children, in addition to part time classroom teacher duties, which include developing and implementing individual educational plans for children.

Duties and responsibilities

Work with HS Director, Coordinators, Center Director and staff to insure the adherence of Head Start Performance Standards and Child Care Administration regulations.

  • Conduct or arrange for formal developmental and behavioral screenings for each child within 45 days of enrollment

  • Observe and record children’s progress using the agency’s on-going assessment method

  • Using the assessment results, provide on-going opportunities for each child to develop skills related to the Head Start Child Outcomes in preparation for School Readiness and lifelong learning

  • Apply positive classroom management and discipline techniques

  • Incorporate a good health/mental health and nutrition program into the daily/weekly plans

  • Assist children who are not potty trained as needed

  • Compile information and write reports on children’s behavior for discussion with Mental Health/Disabilities Manager and parents

  • Implement Individual Education Plan objectives and evaluate progress; attend Admission review and Dismissal meetings as needed

  • Schedule and conduct at least two (2) home visits and parent/staff conferences per school year

  • Work in partnership with parents, individually and collectively, to insure children’s success in all aspects of the program through; parent education & training, parent involvement and planning, parent & staff collaboration

  • Provide on-site assistance to staff, parents and volunteers increasing their knowledge and skills of child development concepts to effectively work with children

  • Attend and participate in meetings and trainings as required

  • Offer feedback and support to Teaching Staff

  • Perform all other duties as designated by the Education Manager/Coordinator or the HS Director


  • Preferred: A.A. degree in Early Childhood Education or related field

  • Minimum: Child Development Associate Credential (CDA) and willingness/ability to work towards AA degree in ECE or related field

  • Bilingual staff person is a requirement at centers where it is necessary (1304.52(g)(2))

  • One (1) year experience working in a licensed Child Care facility

  • Must have current or ability to obtain First Aid and CPR certification

  • Ability to fully participate in a program for active youngsters. This includes lifting young children, getting up and down from the floor, lively outdoors activities and moving furniture

  • Must be able to demonstrate care and concern for Head Start children and families

  • Ability to communicate and collaborate with various professional and community groups throughout the three counties

  • Ability to organize and delegate in an efficient manner and work with minimal supervision

  • Must be willing/able to travel

  • Must obtain and pass a physical, TB test, and criminal background check

  • Must be knowledgeable in Maryland Child Abuse laws and act accordingly

  • Must have reliable means of transportation

  • Must have computer skills and ability to work with Word, Excel and other database software
