This position is located at the Chestertown, MD Manufacturing Facility.

Job Description

This role is for a Chemical Engineer to provide engineering technical support for a batch manufacturing plant. Individuals in this role utilize a broad range of chemical engineering skills on projects that range from small to large in both scope and cost. Projects may be urgent in support of manufacturing process problems or long-range study projects to improve efficiency or reliability of operations. The engineer will work closely with others in Engineering, Maintenance, and Manufacturing Operators to assist in achieving their objectives.

This engineer will perform process oriented technical work to improve the manufacturing of plasticizers used to supply material for the production of various automotive and construction products/applications. The engineer will be responsible for providing technical assistance to manufacturing area and other technical groups. This person will be involved in identification of process improvement opportunities, problem formulation and solution, engineering and statistical analysis, basic equipment design or specification and problem solving on the manufacturing process.

A typical assignment will involve defining a problem, developing an understanding of the process and solution requirements, organizing and performing experimental work, analysis of data, drawing of a conclusion, developing and implementing a solution, presenting solution options, writing associated technical communication and providing recommendations associated with the project.

Depending on size of effort required work would either be done as an individual contributor, or as part of a larger team effort. Leadership of a team effort is expected. This position will report to the site Technical Manager.

Job Responsibilities

  • You will have the hands-on opportunity to apply your skills to a variety of batch/continuous chemical processes and plant utility equipment.

  • You will be challenged to quickly become an expert in the manufacturing processes in order to deliver value to the company.

  • The job involves a combination of troubleshooting immediate process problems, solving those problems in a timely fashion, and then working to understand, develop, test, and implement preventive solutions.

  • Projects may involve optimizing and de-bottlenecking existing processes as well as developing new processes/products.

Education and Experience Required:

A successful candidate will have strong analytical skills, a strong background in chemistry, and a basic understanding of the mechanics and operation of chemical process machinery. The candidate must be capable of managing the details of a project while keeping in mind the larger project objective. The person in this job will be expected to work with a normal level of guidance and oversight, and be able to take the initiative in removing the normal barriers encountered in project execution.

Additional Qualifications include:

  • Good written and oral communications.

  • BS in Chemical Engineering.

  • Three (3) or more years of chemical engineering experience preferred, at least two (2) years in a manufacturing environment.

  • Data analysis and problem-solving skills.

  • Planning and organization skills. This person must be able to manage themselves and their work with minimal guidance.

  • Execute projects as part of a team, as a team leader or independently.

  • Ensure PSM, health, safety, and environmental concerns for all projects have been addressed.

  • Analyze the technical possibilities for solving process problems and developing new processes.

  • Analyze and document the economic value of proposed process solutions and new process concepts.

  • Manage project portfolio based on economic and business inputs to priority.

  • Experience with any of the following systems would be an advantage: Distributed Control systems, PI Process Book and Statistical Analysis tools
