AstraZeneca is now looking to hire a Director within Manufacturing Science and Technology. Placement for the role is preferably Macclesfield, England.

Pharmaceutical Technology and Development (PTD) is the bridge that turns brilliant science into actual medicines that help millions of people. We work across the entire value chain, designing and delivering active ingredients, formulations and devices for new medicines and providing expert technical support to all AZ’s commercial drug substances and products to ensure we successfully supply medicines to patients. Manufacturing Science and Technology provides Product Robustness (data analytics, validation strategy and product knowledge management), Manufacturing Technology Strategy, and second line On Market Technical Support for Oral Solid Dosage forms and soon, Pack and Packaging.

As Head of Pack and Packaging Center of Excellence, you will get the opportunity to lead a team of packing engineers (direct and indirect reports) to provide robust second line on market technical support for the packing process as well as packaging materials. You will work closely with the other MS&T leads and on market technical support teams to ensure an enterprise wide approach is utilized. You will work especially close with the AZ internal and later, external packing sites to examine and implement new packing technologies and processes in partnership with other departments in Operations ensuring a coherent, enterprise approach.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provides strategic leadership and sets the strategic direction of the Operations Pack and Packaging CoE to ensure it contributes effectively to the strategic, tactical and operational aims of the business

  • Champion pack and packaging technology, feeding into the overarching Technology Strategy and ensure appropriate interface with the sister technology teams (Inhalation, API, OSD, Parenteral).

    • Responsible for reaching agreement on the Operating Model, Establishing, and Embedding it as a novel organisation approach to MS&T Pack and Packaging CoE.
  • Ensures appropriate global support for second line packing issue resolution as required by the business

  • Develops and implements strategies to establish a world class technical organisation providing outstanding customer service for all AstraZeneca sites and for external partner organisations

  • Accountable for setting, managing/adhering to financial budget.

  • Develops solutions to a diverse range of problems requiring complex judgements based on highly developed levels of conceptual thought, strategic vision and analysis

  • Creates and sustains a high quality function, which aims to continuously improve in competence, scientific excellence and innovation

  • Ensures the appropriate technical direction of work in area of technical specialism, and leads and reviews approaches to technical problem solving within the group

  • Collaborates and communicates within AZ and with external partners as required

  • Ensures an enterprise wide approach to on market technical support, maintaining close alignment with the other directors and first line teams at sites.

  • Operates at the highest level of risk management

  • Ensures compliance with professional quality management standards, Safety Health and Environment regulations and Good Manufacturing Practice ensuring that all work is carried out with regard to AstraZeneca and external regulatory policies and standards

  • Working in alignment with Product Robustness-Validation and sites, ensure appropriate packing process validation and Continuous Process Verification standards designed and implemented. Ensure aligned, enterprise approach for spec setting of packaging materials (secondary and tertiary). Out of scope is labeing and artwork process and systems.

Essential Requirements:

  • Substantial depth in at least one of the following: packaging development for NPI, packing process technical transfer, packaging material science, packing equipment design and specification.

  • Ability to influence in a complex, matrixed environment with a sound business process management approach.

  • Excellent understanding of the overall drug development and commercialization process from development, launch and through life cycle management, with particular emphasis on Packing Process and Packaging materials.

  • Minimum masters degree in Engineering or related discipline

  • Significant experience of leading and managing teams of people, large scale projects and financial budgets

  • Have a thorough understanding of principles, applications and management of Safety Health and Environment and Good Manufacturing Practice

  • Extensive, hands on experience in Packaging,

  • Extensive experience in Operations and preferably Research and Development as well, with a track record of successful leadership and delivery within a matrix organization

  • Excellent communication skills and ability to build excellent relationships with customers

  • Team management skills, including experience overseeing the training and development of team members

Desirable Requirements:

  • Advanced Engineering degree or related scientific discipline

  • Professional credibility within the business and industry and direct experience working with equipment and packaging material suppliers and CMOs

  • Preferable to have both packing and drug process experience

  • Extensive knowledge of the latest technical and regulatory expectations in packing, packaging

  • Extensive knowledge of latest packing technologies and tools

  • Risk management application experience

  • Experience developing and implementing lean solutions to solve complex business problems. Black Belt highly desired.

  • Proven experience establishing a new group or team
